By the 1500s London was definitively the most important city in England. Bounded by Royal Palaces, home to some of our most colourful monarchs. Let me take you one a stroll through the city streets, past prisons and guild halls, through main roads and dangerous districts. London is growing outside the City walls, as her population grows. They need better infrastructure, to provide water and food. The docks too are growing as international trade expands, bringing prosperity to the merchants of London. How do they spend their wealth? What do they wear, eat and drink? Activities such as reading books and pamphlets hot off the presses of Fleet Street, and hearing a play on Bankside, both help make this a golden age for literature. The reformation and the dissolution of the monasteries was to change religious life entirely. We’ll see how the monarchs' private lives impacted everyday citizens.
So walk with me, to see what has survived and conjure up what's long lost from Palaces to prisons and everything in between. To explore a capital city as it starts to swagger.
